Some of My Favourite Photography Locations In Winnipeg

Updated: Aug 27, 2023

10 Winnipeg locations I like to utilize for capturing great photographs

Winnipeg has some well-known outdoor locations for natural light photographs, but also some forgotten or less thought of locations. Below is a list of some of my favourite spots around the city.

1. The Forks

The Forks is Winnipeg’s main tourist destination, where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet, and is in abundance of options for photo opportunities. This National Historic Site offers a vibrant mix of history, green space, shopping, dining, and entertainment and is perfect for architecture, landscape and art photography. During the summer, hike along the river walk or take a guided boat tour, rent a canoe, or take a waterbus to see Winnipeg from the water. Then, go inside The Forks Market to admire the historical buildings-maintained architecture, tourists and Winnipeggers enjoying local food and beverages. The Forks is a great versatile location for indoor and outdoor options in all seasons.

2. St. Boniface Cathedral

Across the river from the Forks is St. Boniface Cathedral. This beautiful historical site is a go to location for Winnipeg wedding photographs. It is an important structure in Winnipeg, serving the eastern part of Manitoba province as well as the local Franco-Manitoban community. It is the main church in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Boniface.

3. Provencher Bridge and The Human Rights Museum

The Provencher Bridge sits at the end of the Forks next to the Human Rights Museum and close to St. Boniface Cathedral, and links downtown Winnipeg and St. Boniface. The Provencher Bridge is a perfect location for landscape photographers in Winnipeg.

4. The Manitoba Legislature Building And Grounds

The Manitoba Legislature building is a popular indoor and outdoor location for photographers and is a prime wedding photography location. Inside they have a massive stairwell, long, narrow corridors, and a colourful sunlight in the ceiling that allows light to filter through slightly.

In addition to the Manitoba Legislature Building itself, the Legislative Grounds surrounding it are worth exploring for photography. The well-maintained gardens, manicured lawns, and ornate statues provide a classic and elegant setting for portraits or architectural shots. The grandeur of the legislative building combined with the surrounding landscape creates a captivating atmosphere for photography.

5. The Exchange District

The Exchange District is a Winnipeg Historical Site that now thrives as one of the city's commercial and cultural hubs. It has an outstanding collection of heritage buildings dating from 1880 to 1920. The Exchange, also known as the "Chicago of the North," is home to more than 150 immaculate heritage buildings spread across 20 square blocks.

6. Stephen Juba Park - Waterfront Drive

This Park is one of those gems in downtown Winnipeg and my go to for engagement and wedding photography in the spring, summer, and fall, with a quaint little bridge, river shots and beautiful flora.

7. Assiniboine Park

Assiniboine Park is a picturesque location that offers a variety of opportunities for photography. From beautiful flower gardens to scenic walking paths, the park provides a stunning backdrop for outdoor portraits and nature photography. Don't miss the chance to capture the iconic Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, the tranquil Assiniboine Park Zoo, which is home to various animals and offers unique photo opportunities, or the Leaf, a spectacular indoor horticultural attraction.

8. Kildonan Park

Kildonan Park is a hidden gem in Winnipeg, offering a peaceful and natural environment for photography. The park features lush greenery, walking trails, and a scenic pond, making it an ideal location for capturing outdoor family portraits or candid shots of people enjoying nature. The park's serene ambiance and diverse landscape provide ample opportunities for creative photography.

9. Little Mountain Park

Little Mountain Park is a fantastic location for nature enthusiasts and outdoor photographers. This expansive park features dense forests, winding trails, and scenic lookout points that provide breathtaking panoramic views of the city. It's an excellent spot for landscape photography, especially during the fall when the foliage turns vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold.

10. The University of Manitoba Campus

The University of Manitoba campus offers a blend of modern architecture and natural beauty, making it a captivating location for photography. Explore the expansive grounds, capture the unique structures like the Administration Building or the iconic UMSU University Centre, and take advantage of the open spaces and green lawns for portraits or group photos.

Other popular downtown locations for photography include:

- The Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG)

- The Manitoba Museum

Remember to check the photography policies of each location before planning your shoot and respect any restrictions or guidelines in place. These additional photography locations will provide a broader range of options for capturing the beauty of Winnipeg and creating stunning and memorable photographs.
